Details: Villages at Lincoln is the launching pad for individuals and families to get off public assistance, gain their economic independence, and learn to rely on themselves. And RRHA’s Family-Self Sufficiency Program provides the count-down. Villages at Lincoln is one of the most significant affordable housing projects undertaken in the history of the RRHA. This project is changing the face of public housing, creating a mixed income residential neighborhood that better integrates into the surrounding neighborhood. With more housing opportunities, residents can move from one level of housing to the next as they gain self-sufficiency, without relocating to another neighborhood in the City. Villages at Lincoln is the transformation of a 300-unit high density “public housing development” into a beautiful, village-like community. The number of public housing units on site has been reduced and additional new duplex rental houses and single-family homes have been built. It’s a success story you have to see to believe. The Family Self-Sufficiency Program links you to services available in the Roanoke Valley that can assist you and your family members with the education, job training and supportive services needed to meet your self-sufficiency goals. For instance, we’re finding more effective uses of technology — both as a means of improving internal operating efficiencies and assisting residents in becoming self-sufficient. We see the Villages at Lincoln community as a world-class, computer-ready neighborhood where residents have the connections, equipment and training they need to improve their job skills. Technology is a tool for empowerment, enabling youth to break the cycle of poverty, adults to advance their job skills, and elderly to obtain information and communicate using the Internet.
