Details: The Times Square is Breaking Ground’s flagship supportive housing residence. When Breaking Ground acquired the building in 1991, the Times Square, a former grand hotel, was crime-ridden and in a state of shocking disrepair. The transformation of the building into the largest permanent supportive housing residence in the nation contributed to the revitalization of the Times Square neighborhood as a whole, and demonstrated a new approach to ending long-term urban homelessness. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Times Square has received several awards for its innovative programs and historic preservation and design, and has been featured in national media including The New York Times, CBS’s 60 Minutes, and National Public Radio. The Times Square combines permanent affordable housing and onsite supportive services for low-income and formerly homeless adults, persons with serious mental illness, and persons living with HIV/AIDS. Our social service partner, the Center for Urban Community Services, provides a range of on-site social services. The building features a double-height lobby, which serves as a gallery for displaying the work of resident artists. The Top of the Times, a spacious community room on the top floor with sweeping views of the city, hosts tenant events and trainings. Residents: Low-income and formerly homeless adults, persons with serious mental illness, and persons living with HIV/AIDS. Special Features: Green Building/Green Roof; Fitness Room; Computer Lab; Bike Storage; 24-Hour Security; Arts Studio; Community/Multi-purpose Room; Medical Suite; Library; Laundry onsite
