Details: If architectural beauty, historic significance, and proximity to the hum of arts and culture in the vibrant city of Boston are amenities you need and love, the Brownstones has it all. Located in the heart of the South End Historic District, the Brownstones offer historic charm and convenient urban living. The waitlist is open, but long for the 35 apartments, which have one-bedroom each. Seven are geared to people earning 30 percent of area median income; the rest are charged market rates. Renovations included close attention to historic detail, in keeping with the Boston Landmark Board’s preservation requirements. The new wood windows and doors match the original design. But, not everything is old-style. The kitchens are modern and the heating and electrical systems are up-to-date. The Boston Symphony Hall is a short walk away, as is the Museum of Fine Arts and the Prudential Center. There’s a fine park and garden called the Boston Common and the Boston Public Garden. There are hospitals within easy reach, wonderful restaurants, jazz clubs, Rock and Roll hot spots, movie theaters, the ballet. And, if you don’t like to walk, public transportation is handy. Once known as the Boston Neck, the South End was created in the 1840s with earth hauled in from Needham, according to Arlene Vadum (www.south-end-boston.com/History), because Boston was getting overcrowded. It precedes the Back Bay, which was created in the 1870s. It was originally home to the up and coming, but has seen its economics shift back and forth through the decades, attracting a mix of ethnicities. In 1973 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, Vadum writes, due largely because it is “the largest urban Victorian neighborhood in the country.” In 1983 it was named a Boston Landmark District.
